Hotel Housekeeping: The Heartbeat of the Hotel

What department within a hotel is essential for service? The housekeeping department, of course. Many refer to housekeeping as ‘the heartbeat of the hotel.’ We wouldn’t have hotels or guests without our housekeepers.

Hotel guest expectations need to be met

Every single guest expects and deserves to receive exemplary housekeeping services including an immaculate guest room. Everyone knows the basics include a bed with clean, fresh sheets, a sparkling clean bathroom that is well-stocked, all amenities readily available, and all equipment in working order. Also, an important component of a guest’s stay is to be able to communicate with the housekeeper.

Hotel English skills essential for hotel housekeeping staff

Addressing language barriers will significantly improve communication as well as productivity for both the employee and the guest. Respecting cultural diversity is also important. Providing Workplace ESL training enables hotels to offer their services for guests with the housekeeping staff able to communicate in English. Employees respect and greatly appreciate employers that provide training to improve their skill set and eliminate language barriers.

NHLA members provide Workplace ESL for housekeeping employees

There are various programs and options to offer Workplace ESL at a hotel. One of the easiest and most affordable methods is to provide hotel English online training for the non-English speaking employees.

A comprehensive application for Hotel English Online has been developed in partnership between Vegas PBS and Workplace ESL Solutions, two NHLA member entities.

“For students to be able to access the program via any computer or Internet device at any time makes it convenient to study for the employee and the employer,” states Ronna Timpa, Workplace ESL Solutions.

Workplace ESL skills build confidence and productivity

Learning English substantially increases communication and productivity for each employee. Most importantly being able to communicate in English develops confidence in the employees. As confidence and English proficiency builds, productivity builds making it a win-win for employers, employees and guests.
