TRIA extension bill
  • On October 12, 2007, Senators Christopher Dodd (D-Conn) and Richard Shelby (R-Ala) agreed on a seven-year TRIA extension bill, which will:
    -- Eliminate the distinctions between foreign and domestic acts of terrorism;
    -- Offer a study of nuclear-biological-chemical-radiological (NBCR) causes;
    -- Offer a study of reset mechanisms (coverage of which was included in the House version).
  • The bill was passed by the Senate Banking Committee on October 17, 2007, by a vote of 20-1, and is now awaiting action by the full Senate.
H2B Visa
  • Continued support is needed for Senate Bill 988 and House Bill 1843 regarding a one-year extension of the H-2B waiver program.
  • The current extension amendment on the table was added by Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md) as a clean, one-year extension amendment to the Senate's Commerce-Justice-State Appropriations bill.
  • Currently, the House and Senate versions of the bill are now in the conference committee.
  • Members are encouraged to contact your Members of Congress and urge their continued support of S988 and HR 1843.
No Match
  • On August 31, 2007, the U.S. District court for the Northern District of California issued a temporary restraining order against implementation of the recently-released regulations regarding Social Security "no match" letters.
  • This injunction was in response to a lawsuit filed by the AFL-CIO with the support of other coalitions, including the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition (EWIC), of which AH&LA is a member.
  • The suit contends that the proper study required by law of the burden wasn't performed, and also contends that the Social Security database is being misused.
